PSHE makes a significant contribution to pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour , safety, well-being and ability to build healthy relationships with others.
Implementation
We participate in and promote national events such as: Fairtrade Fortnight, Mental Health Awareness Week, Anti-Bullying Week and Internet Safety Week.
The schemes of learning we teach and the activities outlined above ensure that we meet the statutory requirements set out in the new 2020 curriculum; Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education.
We have adopted a scheme of work from Kapow: this is a clear and progressive PSHE curriculum, which meets the statutory requirements to teach Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education . The scheme is divided into 7 different strands:
- Families and Relationships
- Health and Wellbeing
- Safety and the Changing Body
- Citizenship
- Economic Wellbeing
- Transition
- Identity
Within each strand, we have designed age appropriate topics for the classes. One topic per half term is taught to each class and these topics are explored in more detail as children move through school. Some content will be taught to only one year group within the mixed age class. We will also adapt sessions to meet the particular needs of our own children, for example discussions around farm safety will be included in our work on keeping safe.
In addition to PSHE lessons there are regular PSHE assemblies which are adapted to cover areas we feel children in school need to focus on at a particular moment, or to cover the key values that we have identified as being part of our 'Greenhaugh Code.' These values are kindness, resilience, confidence, being unique, showing empathy, ambition and respect. Each week children who have demonstrated a particular trait are awarded corresponding Dojo points and celebrated in our Monday Celebration assembly.
Impact
Through our PSHE and RSE curriculum, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become confident individuals who have positive body awareness, an in-depth knowledge of how to keep themselves safe and healthy and who will, through respect, tolerance and understanding, forge and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of family and friendship groups.
Government guidance for PSHE and RSE
In line with Kapow's clear and progressive curriculum, there is a Parents’ and carers’ guide for Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE). You can access it from this page and it details further the curriculum and statutory expectations for the teaching of this area of the curriculum.
