Music

Intent

At Greenhaugh, our aim is to provide a high quality music education that engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and nurtures their talent as musicians.
Music Specialists from Music Partnership North deliver our weekly music lessons.  Children will all learn to play an instrument, read notation, learn and use musical terms and also perform.  During Music in school pupils have the opportunity to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. In addition to learning an instrument they learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others.

Implementation

In EYFS and KS1, the children enjoy singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. They have the opportunity to play percussion instruments which they use to create, select and combine sounds. They also listen and move to a wide range of music. In their Specialist music lessons they learn to play the recorder, begin to read music and understand simple music terms. They play lots of games an d sing songs that involve developing an understanding of rhythm and beat.

Children in KS2 build on the skills acquired in KS1 so that they sing and play with increasing control and self-confidence. Children are encouraged to explore their own musical preferences and discuss these with confidence.  This year children in Class 2 are learning to play the recorder, reading notation, understanding and using more complex musical terms.

All children take part in weekly singing assemblies which contribute to our Harvest, Christmas and Easter celebrations, providing an opportunity for the children to share their work in music with parents, governors and other friends of the school.

Impact

Children will develop a love of music. Exposure to high quality teaching means children will enjoy performing and participating in music and will learn to appreciate and evaluate the work of others. Exposure to music will also
• Reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.
• Help children regulate their emotions.
• Improve concentration and on-task behaviour.
• Enhance the way children can process language and speech
